The fence idea is a good one except I would not weld galvanized metal.  It gives
of a  toxic gas (seems to me it was phosgen or something like that).  Not to mention
welding galvanized metal makes it brittle or so I was told.

You can get rolls of  metal cloth or slick wire fence that are already welded at the joints that you 
can join together at a few points with a welder in a cross pattern.  It comes in a roll so you
can start in the middle and roll on out however far you want.

Granted chain link will lie down easier but that is a lot of joints to task together.

I have heard of people using chicken wire and various other fencing products as well.

I was told during my General class that the "perfect" cointerpoise would 
be a disc of metal, some fraction of the wavelength in diameter.  I don't 
recall if it was 1/2 or 1/4.  I don't have my old notebook with me. :)  

I got to thinking last night that it would be possible to build something 
at least electrically similar by building a "mat" of chainlink fencing 
material that was welded at the "joints" in the fence.  

Now while I know this would be time consiming to build, would it be worth 
the effort for a multi-band vertical like those made by Hy-Gain, Cushcraft 
or SteppIR?
