And then there's the experience I've had over the past 29 years where I'v=
e
never found a seriously damaged tuner. =
I've had virtually all kinds, including many I know had serious power put=
through them. I'm a serious qrper, so loss within the tuner is very impor=
tant
to me, and I've use everything from MFJs to Johnsons, and most of the
autotuners out there. My experience here leads me to disagree with Robert=
's
"often found problem list," and I have very seldom found any sort of dama=
ge,
much less anything of the magnitude of what is listed. Don't get me wrong=
-
there have been a few times, but it was the exception rather than the
expected. When there was damage, it was generally several things in the S=
AME
tuner where someone had really abused it.
I also disagree about the tuners at hamfests and being for sale being the=
re
because they were abused. It is the nature of many of us to mess with
antennas, so many hams try tuners at some time or other (usually with poo=
r
antennas). Many also find out that antenna experimenation isn't for them,=
so
they end up buying antennas that do not require a tuner and they sell the=
ones
they have. On a number of occasions I've bought tuners (including the big=
and
old, but excellent Johnsons) that were virtually un-used. =
For the record, all of the tuners I've bought were for personal use only,=
never for any sort of resale, all were purchased from other hams (none we=
re
bought new), and most were reasonably priced (compared to new versions of=
the
same tuner, if available). I now use autotuners (LDGs) exclusively, as mu=
ch
for size on the shelf as for convenience.
One set of experiences, somewhat different from Roberts. I'm certainly so=
rry
that he has had so many problemms with tuners in the past. My experience
hasn't been so bad.
