[Antennas] antenna idea

I have a great antenna now for my scanner.  we had a real bad ice/wind 
storm last night and the antenna for the sheriffs office was the 
cahilty. I helped a friend who has a two way radio business out taking 
down the old one and putting a new one up. I asked him what he was doing 
with the old one he said you want it it's yours. he said it probably 
isn't fixable to transmit on but would make a great antenna to hook 
scanners   to. It is made for vhf. it is made out of fiberglass and is 
about 7 or 8 feet tall they had it on a huge base thing and this was at 
the very top. It isn't the type of antenna that is ana rey but one 
string like rod type antenna . with the coax coming out the bottom. any 
ideas on making a tri pod or hooking to the side of a garage to get it 
in the air. right know I just have it leaned against the house and 
getting great signals.  we also lost a fed ex palne with this storm and 
polte.
