I would disagree...=0D

The air passing over your antenna will build up static electricity in=0D
your antenna. Especially in times of high wind.=0D
=0D
Grounding it will bleed it off.=0D
=0D
I agree with disconnecting it from everything EXCEPT your ground.=0D
=0D
Not earth grounding an antenna is irresponsible and just might=0D
invalidate your home owner insurance as well since grounding is=0D
an established safety procedure.=0D

Remember the old adage; "Real Hams Drill Holes". It's the same for your h=
ome
QTH or your mobile! Drill a hole near your Shack large enough for the
ladder-line to pass through (commercial 450 ohm line is not that large) r=
un
it through and chalk around it. You will then have a true balanced line
without a mismatch of unknown value where you soldered in the coax, and n=
o
worries about what water might do, as it seeps into the coax over the nex=
t
few years.=0D
 =0D
Run the ladder-line direct to a good tuner and work all freq. above the
lowest resonance set by the length of the wire in the closed loop. The
ladder-line will actually add some length to the antenna by acting as par=
t
of the antenna at lower freq's. only not as efficiently.=0D
 =0D
A good tuner will have the balun built in. Be aware of the Max power
handling capabilities of the tuner and use one that will handle your stat=
ion
 and any new equipment you are thinking about buying.=0D
 =0D
There is only one way to protect from lighting that is certain; DISCONNEC=
T
EVERYTHING WHEN NOT IN USE - AND DON'T USE ANYTHING WHEN THERE ARE NEARBY
STORMS!=0D
Don't use grounding switches in your antenna lines. That only makes sure
that lighting WILL STRIKE!=0D
