ICOM once made a similiar type loading coil.  The
rotary switch was stepped from one position to the
next with a magnetic operated rachet.  One pulse
stepped the switch to the next position.  The band
info from the transceiver was decoded and converted
to "how many steps to 10 meters?"  The IC-720 also
used this scheme for switching band pass filters.
That was a chronic fault.      73  Clete
