Yes it delivers less energy than a dipole cut to it's frequency,
BUT receivers have tremendous gain capability, held back by the AGC.
If the delivered signal strength isn't below the threshold of
usability you can work them. (on CW, on voice I don't know)
It is like being a lot farther away than you are, with a gud
receiver it is no big problem, if the receiver isn't HOT it
will restrict you to HOT signals.
With a HOT receiver you will be able to hear weak signals, too
weak to work with no antenna connected to it. Very HOT signals.
It is hard to shield a receiver that has over 90 dB of gain.
