Well on the roof, it depends on a few things
1) do you go into any parking garages on a REGULAR basis???
(if so, consider a 1/4wave on 2 and use that as a dualband for
UHF..in the city, it works just fine; switch to the higher gain on the open road!)
2) IF you put a gain dualband on the roof, will it fit in YOUR
garage at home? If not, are you prepared to fold it down or remove everytime??
I went through the same thing with my S10 Blazers...I went with
roof mounts...best ground plane and done right, no leaks or scratches...
I used 1/4waves on 2 and 220...using the 2m on 440 worked just
fine in town...out on the highway, I went high gain dualband and 5/8wave on 220...
In fact 10 years later they were there when the Blazer slid off the road in a freak accident and ended up turned upside down in a 10ft deep ditch...the antennas SURVIVED and I still have the 220 in use today on my new Blazer..which I have taken too long to drill and mount and now the roof HAS scratches from the mag mount!! DOH!!!
IF you cannot trust yourself to drill holes in the roof, have a local BONDED radio shop do it for you! It wont cost much and they can probably snake the cable through also...MAKE SURE they have done your type of car BEFORE!!!
I have lots of vehicles but no Outbacks....but I would take it on ONLY after I look it over and decide...some cars are just too hard to do...and some are as easy as calling the local dealer and asking a guy in the body shop how to remove certain pieces that are the way..
IF you STILL dont want to drill, go with a Larsen ONGLASS KD2/70
(DO NOT use any other HIGH Z type onglass...they dont xfer power
well!)...BUT make sure your tinted glass does NOT have metal in it...(some do!!)
I would go with magmount as a 3rd and last resort (I Know...I speak from experience...and have taken too long with mine..but I am about to trade off my latest Blazer...found out the gas mileage SUCKS..soooo hello Mistubishi!!! 0/0/0!!! )

David,
I also have a Subaru (a 2001 Outback), and would like to install
a 2m/440 antenna on it. I haven't done it yet because I just can't
decide where to put the thing. I was wondering what type of
mount you use (NMO, magnetic?) and where you placed it on
the roof. Also, are you driving an Outback as well or another
model?
Thanks and 73,
