Tom,
This is really way off subject except for the fact that the guy down the=20
street has an antenna and I have one, but he will get reported if he keeps=
=20
it up. I have calmly gone onto my 11 meter HT when he was on acting like=20
an idiot and merely stated that he was being recorded. He had no idea who=
=20
it was that said it and it was AMAZING the effect it had on him. In fact,=
=20
after asking about 15 times who said he was being recorded with no=20
response, he left the air. And I didn't hear him on the air again for at=20
least 2 weeks. When he DID come back on the air, he had toned things down=
=20
a bit. Funny, isn't it, how even the mere THREAT of punishment can change=20
behavior?
I still need to set up a tape recorder with VOX connected to the HT and=20
leave it on to catch the illegal activities. Many people using CB's appear=
=20
to have never read the Part 95 rules. Look at the statute about=20
transmission lengths...
=A7 95.416 (CB Rule 16) Do I have to limit the length of my=20
communications? (a) You must limit your CB communications to the minimum=20
practical time. (b) If you are communicating with another CB station or=20
stations, you, and the stations communicating with you, must limit each of=
=20
your conversations to no more than five continuous minutes. (c) At the end=
=20
of your conversation, you, and the stations communicating with you, must=20
not transmit again for at least one minute.
How many people that you hear on 11 meters follow those rules? And that's=
=20
just one of many.
Not to single 11 meter folks out, we have a lot of hams that also don't=20
follow the rules. I occasionally listen to a repeater here in Dallas where=
=20
a few people almost never ID. Most do, but a few don't. It's not as bad=20
as the W6NUT repeater in California, but it can be bad sometimes. And lest=
=20
we get on our high horse and claim that we're so much better than the 11=20
meter folks (keep in mind I have never said they're all bad because there=20
are a lot of good people on 11 meters, but there sure are a lot of stinkers=
=20
on there too), take a listen to the W6NUT repeater to hear the worst of ham=
=20
radio. Not in the LA basin you say? That's ok. Go to http://www.435.org/=
=20
and click on the link for the Live365 net broadcast of the repeater. A=20
word of caution though. Don't have the kids around if you do and if you=20
have any sensibilities to foul language, you might want to think twice=20
about listening to it. I think every ham should listen to it once though,=
=20
so they can see how easily our hobby can degenerate into the worst of 11=20
meter operation. Don't think it can happen? Just listen. It's=20
amazing...it sounds the same way an IRC chat channel looks. There will be=
=20
4 distinct conversations all going on at once, but only 1 can transmit at a=
=20
time.
The thing that gets me about this repeater though is...and this brings me=20
back to my former statement about how slow the FCC can be to rectify things=
=20
like this...is how long have we been reading about proceedings from the FCC=
=20
about this repeater? Are they listening to it? Why is it taking them so=20
long to get it off the air? And I'm talking about a widely used=20
REPEATER! Not some yayhoo using an illegal 11 meter radio in Podunk=20
Texas. You can't have any more rules violations than you will hear on that=
=20
repeater...and it's still on the air. Maybe the FCC will make an example=20
of this guy down the street, maybe they won't. If he keeps up the=20
behavior, I'll try my little behavior modification trick on him again and=20
if it has no effect, then I'll pursue it further and see what happens.
Ok...stepping off the soap box, attempting to keep from slipping on the=20
suds. Did someone mention antennas? :)
