While I've responded to the individuals who offered info/help regarding my
continuing HFDL problems, I wanted to thank the list membership overall, as
well as the individuals. Additionally, I heard from a few individuals
having similar problems and want to share what has been offered to me:

While I won't have a chance to try all this for several days, here is some
raw info:

Basic symptom: "no matter what I do", all I get is error messages regading
frequency errors...program seems sensitive to audio level.

Here are some of the points I have been given:

1) The audio board, regardless of what type, must not be overdriven...the
decoder (perhaps the coding system) will not tolerate any audio clipping.
2) Receiver must be rock stable and feature about 3KHz bandwidth-a good
(that is commercial/military grade signal path with particular attention to
IF filters is necessary for good performance...a DSP receiver is ideal).
The group delay contributed by the receiver must be as low as achievable
with the equipment on hand.
3) The audio board must be capable of 7200 samples per second...I was not
clear whether that is "at least 7200" or "exactly 7200". In any case, I'll
be fiddling with the AWE-64...so far all the adjustments bottom out at 8000
samples per second. I'm hoping that's just the bottom based on the
applications I'm using thus far.
4) Slow, old dumpy PC's cannot process this data fast enough-one comment
indicated a PII, 450MHz was "getting there".

happy fiddling and hoping for no smoke
