The effect of a deformation in Coaxial cable will depend on many
factors. First consideration is the frequency. Then there is the
degree of deformation, i.e., how bad and physically how long.
Whether it's lumped or distributed, etc. A lot of bad splices I've
seen were caused by using a dirty soldering iron on the center
conductor. Alcohol or acetone will prevent a lot of that. You're
right, if the characteristics are not the same all the way along the
line the time-domain reflectometer will find identify the baddies.
