Sean,

The gain would be along the axis of antenna.  If you make the axis 
vertical, the gain would be vertical, up and down.  Ok for a satellite, 
overhead.  Check the ARRL Handbook, or ARRL Antenna Handbook for the gain 
pattern of a long wire.
