I thought that was what the twist was for.
From another report the twist helps in removing outside influences on the
line or the line influencing itself. That is why telegraph lines had a
'twist' every so often. Power lines (high tension) cross or twist every so
often between poles.
The wind twist works as well. Note that truckers put a half twist on their
tie down straps, stops the slapping.
And another reason that I found is that when having the line come from the
mast to the eve of the house the twist stopped most of the rain from
running down the whole line. In places it ran off the bottom of the twist.
Moral: twist your line.
