Gentlemen,
As I get a chance to review the features of this new list server and the
settings that were created for each list when it was moved over, I realize
that a few changes need to be made.
Among other things, I have changed the setting so that your "Reply To"
function will default to the sender's address and not the list address, as
it was before. So, if you want a reply or an original message to go to
the entire list, you must type or paste that address in the TO: line. The
address is basically the same, with the addition of the word "mailman" in
the domain.
[email protected]
Subscribing and unsubscribing is also basically the same, with the slight
change in the address.
You should all have received a welcome message with this basic information
in it.
If you did not, or need additional information, I strongly suggest that you
obtain the "help" document by sending a message to the following address:
[email protected]
In the body of the message, put the single word
help
The reflector is still set to reject certain types of messages:
1). HTML, RTF and other stylized, encoded formats.
Only messages sent in plain text only will be accepted.
If you need help setting your email client to send in plain text only, I
recommend the following web site which gives detailed instructions for
almost every email program out there. Some of the newer upgrades are not
specifically mentioned, such as AOL 7.0, but they should be similar to the
previous version, if that is the case.

2). Nonmember posts: If the address from which you are sending a message
is not exactly the same as the one under which you are subscribed, then it
will not be recognized as a valid member and your message will be
rejected. This makes the use of "receive only" aliases difficult, but it
has long been my policy not to add those to the list because of these
problems and the extra work it creates for me. Mailman does not have a
munge domain function (the one in Majordomo didn't really work anyway), but
it does offer a "nomail" option. So, if you really need to have a second
address on the list, but don't want to receive mail at it, that can be
added. Just subscribe FROM that address, and then follow the instructions
for setting it to "nomail." This setting can also be used, of course, for
when you are away from your computer for an extended period of time.
3). Administrative requests: As with Majordomo, messages with certain
key words, such as subscribe and unsubscribe in the subject line will be
rejected. I've suggested to Al that the list of taboo words be expanded to
include a few more such as "remove.," etc. If some admin request does make
it through to the list, either just ignore it, or respond to the individual
privately.
4). Size: I have set the maximum size for a single message at 40K. If
there is really a problem, I may set it lower to around 20K. If you should
really, truly need to send a large message, let me know and I will review
it and pass it through if it is appropriate.
5). Attachments: This one shouldn't need any explanation! If you have an
attachment file that you want to make available have people request it from
you privately and do not try to send it through the list. I won't approve
any of them, period.
If your message is rejected and held for moderator approval, you will
receive a notice to that affect, with the reason for it's being held. I
will try to review these daily, but there will be times when that won't be
possible for one reason or another, so please be patient. In most cases
you will receive an additional message indicating its final disposition if
it is rejected, though not necessarily.
--- We're all learning as we go, and there are bound to be more bumps in
the road, so be patient. Suggestions are always welcome, as are requests
for assistance.
