The "beam width" of a directional array is related to the gain,
according to the formula:
G = 10 log 25,000/theta(squared).
You don't have to be a mathematician too see that with ordinary amateur
beams (having gains in the neighborhood of 4 to 9 dB) the beam widths
are quite broad. So accuracy closer than + or - ten degrees in
determining true north is purely academic. It is just not worth much
trouble to be that accurate.
Of course when it comes to aiming a microwave dish, that's a different
story!
