[Antennas] Phasing Verticals

Hi Friends (you too Irv):

I would like to phase two verticals and have read several articles concerning the theory of operation as well as some engineering data put out by the old Hy-Gain company that was written in the 1970's.

It would appear there are two commonly used phasing arrangements. One uses a 1/2 wave spacing, provides endfire and broadside coverage and will result in 2 dBd and 3.6 dBd forward gain, respectively. The other calls for 1/4 wave spacing, a narrower (carnoid) radiation pattern and 4.5 dBd forward gain.

The one point that isn't enumerated, but seems obvious, is the relationship between spacing and forward gain. Does anyone have a reference that they could share with me that doesn't require an advanced degree in Quantative, non-linear, advanced electrical engineering?

Thanks for reading this and for any help you could offer.
