There is a useful site at http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/AltAz.html which
allows you for any day of the year to find out the azimuth/elevation of the
sun at say 10 minute intervals. It is easy from the table produced to see
the time when the sun is at azimuth 180 degress or due south of your
location. If you have a sunny day the shadow of a vertical stick at that
time will be the north/south line at your location. This is strictly for
purists.
