Hi Andy,
What I did several years ago was use a small auger that they use for tie down
straps on mobile homes.
Stick it into the earth and give 3-4 turns and pull it out with the dirt.
In five minutes you'll have a nice round 5 foot deep hole.
Fill it with water and leave it sit over night and the rod will drive in easy
with a hammer.
Just my 2 cents worth.
