It depends upon how much loss will be encountered in the co-ax. Remember
that the ATU only lets the transmitter "see" the proper load. It does
not remove the standing waves on the feed line when used at the
transceiver end. Of course, with the short runs of co-ax used in a
mobile installation the loss will not be all that great at the lower
frequencies, but will be considerable at 30 MHz, for example.
