Paul, if you quantify "pitiful" or describe what it does or does not do
under what circumstances, maybe we can try to help. <:}
Almost any internal tuner will have a limited SWR range over which it will
work, especially on the lower bands, and most have a difficult time with
reactive loads.
I have internal tuners in all my HF rigs and seldom if ever use them. One
deterrant is the high cost of repair since again *most* internal tuners are
relatively tender compared to the typical external tuner.
