I admit to not being a glass expert, but typically alkalis, such as ammonia and
lye, attack glass. For that reason, in the chemical industry, alkali use in
glass lined reactors is verboten.
High sodium ion concentration is another contributor to glass etching. When we
switched from untreated tap water to softened water, some, but not all, of our
glassware was attacked. Obviously, some glass compositions are more susceptible
than others.
Acids, on the other hand, such as vinegar (5% acetic acid in water), usually do
not cause a problem - at least for most applications. Strong acids of all
types (except hydrofluoric) are typically stored in glass in a chemical
laboratory. Optical glasses may be another issue.
