I've used 3" down spout both as a vertical and as a support for horzontal
wire antennas. Mostly on field day in New Jersey. I found that the ends
could be pushed together and secured with duct tape. It appeared that
the joints didn't need any kind of screws. The 50 foot versions had an
ICOM AH-2 tuner at the base. They were fragile, and were jinned up. One
of the interesting configurations was a balun fed horizontal loop with the
far corner of the loop tied to the down spout. They were expendable then,
but the prices have increased since. 73 Clete
