[Antennas] How can I tell if my signal is getting out?

Yes, one would tune up the transmitter, noting the the place on paper for 
that day and conditions, listen on the receiver, separate instrument, tune 
for the best receive, note that posotion then go back to the transmitter 
and call the CQing station.  Iff all went right you made a contact.  If not 
you wrote al in the log and tried again.  All transmitting activity had to 
be logged, even if no contact was made.  I have a log book full with few 
contact.  Frustration!!
