That's an awful ending for a surge suppressor failure. I wonder if the
plastic strip was UL at some point in its development? It could be that
the MOV device was underrated or the wrong one got installed and ran
close to its avalanche voltage, which would make it run hot. Or more
likely it was loose blades in the outlets themselves that caused one
plug that was carrying current to get too hot, and melted plastic that
then caused a cascade of failures. I have one plastic strip in our
kitchen right now that has one outlet that doesn't grab the prongs of a
normal AC plug. I am going to tape over it right now.
