For Sale: Globe King 500B project
History: My folks gave me a 500B in the late 50’s. I used it for several
years and made many contacts and friends on 40 meters. I’m guessing that it
was 1960 or 61 when I traded it to a guy in San Angelo for a HT-37 sideband
transmitter. I got involved with RTTY and thought the 500B would make a
good transmitter so I contacted the guy and found that he still had some of
it. The case and power supply module were gone, but I purchased the
remainder and started gathering parts to build a power supply from. The
modulator chassis had a lot of rust, so I stripped it of all components, had
it bead blasted, then chrome plated. The modulation transformer was badly
rusted, so I purchased a new one from Dahl and rebuilt the deck. It’s never
had power applied. The RF deck was intact. I also purchased a power
transformer and choke for the PS Deck from Dahl. A new chassis and panel
were purchased and I bought a Globe 755 VFO on ebay so I had most of the
major parts that I needed for the PS deck. I was just starting to work on
the PS deck when I found a 500B PS chassis and panel that had been stripped
of all components except for the VFO. I purchased this, but never got
around to completing it.
The case was a problem. I didn’t have any luck finding a case for the 500
series, but I did find two cases for the 400 series. The 500 series case is
about 2” taller than the 400 case, but I did a cut and paste (welding) and
made the proper sized case from the two 400 cases. The only thing that is
still needed for the case are the brackets that are attached to the sides of
the case for the decks to sit on.
I was going to paint the panels and have them silk screened, so the meters,
knobs, etc. have all been removed and packed to protect them from damage.
It has a 4-250 tube that was working fine when I traded it, and I have an
extra 4-250 but don’t know if it’s good. I also have a pair of new 3B28
rectifier tubes which replaced the 866’s. No tubes for the modulator deck.
I have the original manual and the sales receipt from WRL when it was
purchased.
It hasn’t been touched for a long time (many years), and I’m no longer
interested in working on it myself. Plus nearly all of my friends are no
longer around. I would love for someone to complete it and put it back on
the air!
I don’t have any idea what it’s worth, but will entertain offers. Due to
the size and weight, shipping isn’t an option. I'm located about 15 miles
SE of Oklahoma City.
