I've long echoed Don/K4KYV's comment of 'wherever phone operation is
allowed, AM is allowed'. Meaning, there is no one specific frequency where
only AM is allowed. Its all about whether or not the frequency is in use,
by whatever mode.
Some of you know this, but Darrell/WA5VGO and others, myself sometimes,
although rarely lately, usually gather on 7.160 MHz on Saturday mornings at
about 11am Central time.
The group gets big sometimes but its been fairly well maintained. But,
hey... if it gets too large, be mindful of your bandwidth and move 5 or
more kHz away and start another group.
If you're not an advanced class, what's stopping you, these days,
from upgrading? ;-)
Remember, in the 5th region, 7.285 is busy from around 8am till 9:30am, and
of course, 7.290 from 10am till noon. But, 5kHz away should be good,
because if the frequency isn't busy, AM is allowed.
The only voice subband where AM is -not- allowed, is on10m, from 28.3 to
28.5MHz as that was created as a Novice subband. Power and emissions limits
occur there.
Tune across 7.160 in the afternoons as well, if the band allows, as there
is usually someone listening most all day.
40m has been acting a lot better than it has the previous decade or more,
so generate a carrier, modulate it and make a contact... on 40m. I've even
managed to join in with a mere 25w from a rice box radio, and told I was
amazingly well copy from 200+ miles away.
Hope to see y'all there.
