Back when I had cable TV and the History Channel actually had history on it, they had a show on copper.  One of the little factoids I remembered, was that, from the time copper was first found and used, until today, only 4% of the earths known reserves of copper ore has been tapped.  The processing into almost pure copper for electrical use is what makes it so expensive.
