I enjoyed the article. They seemed to leave out the big syndicated programs such as Dave Ramsey, Rush Limbaugh, and even Coast to Coast. A few AM stations are privately owned, and therefore they can pretty much broadcast whatever they want within the confines of the FCC regulations. One example is 1600, WAAM in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The folks at Politico would never mention them though, unless they stepped into something.. :-)
My 2009 Pontiac Vibe car radio does quite well receiving AM broadcast. Many times in the morning, FM is fluttering, or the Sirius XM cuts out when I am near a Cell Tower. Then I switch to AM, and there it is clear as a bell. In the Austin Texas area, it is 590 KLBJ. All that extra technology, and at times, only AM gets through!
