Great choice of photo!
Joe was a wonderful guy who would give you the shirt off his back or bend
over backward to help you if he could. I recall a decade or so back he was
looking for some 199 tubes for an old radio he was trying to get going so I
sent him a pair. He asked if there was anything I was looking for in
exchange. I said no, but if he saw any of the older 810s with the red
pyroglazed RCA emblems on them to please let me know.
Some weeks or months later a bunch of us were gathered at the home of
KB3AHE (also SK) for the post-Timonium AM pharty. Joe came over and tugged
at my sleeve and motioned for me to follow him outside. There he handed me
a box with 2 beautiful pyroglazed RCA 810s neatly wrapped inside. They now
reside in my 300G.
God bless and watch over Joe; he was indeed a kind soul. He has good
company at the big AM station in the sky, preceded earlier this week by Big
Al Koepke/K1JCL. Al used to operate a 6m AM repeater in CT and was big into
homebrewing large transmitters.
