[AMRadio] Just an evil thought

HI Todd,

Yes I am slowly making up for lost time. I do miss the old black box, many
QSO's with it and many of the guys are still on the air today.

I am slowly recording off a few cassette tapes to mp3's back when I had the
KW1 and Johnson Desk. Gezz did I sound even more dorkie back in the 80s! I
don't know how my Elmers like Woodlawn Don, K7VZP Bill, or Timtron put up
with me all those years!!

My pleasure as always!! 73 de w5jay/jay..

Of course there are times I don't want to be found.. I like a simple one
on one QSO with some people once in a while, and I could see this might
have the effect of creating huge roundtables, instead of spreading out like
we should.

That's probably the biggest problem Brian, beyond people not daring (or
bothering) to call CQ: Everyone piling onto one frequency. It never fails -
if you're willing to host the party, others will come drink the beer! (o:
When this happens, people get bored waiting for their turn to come back
around and often switch off rather than just moving to another frequency and
starting a group there.

One thing I would warn against, and it shouldn't be as big of a problem
using the email list. In years past, we posted about activity before or as
it was happening on different bands, via AMfone.net. Worked great, including
for the deadbeats and jammers. Seems a few of them figured out how to read
the site and were using the reports as roadmaps for jamming. That's the one
big down side to having a site that the public can read without being a
member. We've also had to remind new members not to post reports of
intentional QRM for the same reason. At least on here you have a verifiable
membership base to an extent, and someone isn't able to casually 'read the
mail' by surfing the net.

And though I tend to share Pete's view that folks just need to get off here
get on the air, I'm open to ideas that help people at least get into the
habit of turning the radio on and spinning the VFO now and then. This can
sometimes be followed by activating the PTT circuit and calling CQ! Baby
steps, baby steps.....

Jay, it was good to *finally* work you the other night after all these
years. 40m was certainly flaky but enjoyed hearing you and VE6CQ up in
Calgary. Looking forward to the next time, and TNX AGN for that great
article in ER so many years ago. It was a huge help in bringing another
transmitter back to the airwaves.
