[AMRadio] BC375 in the real world

Does anybody have any knowledge of how BC375's actually sounded when in operation during WW II or after?  I'm referring to the fact that, unlike using them on the hambands today where 50 watts out and TU's neutralized to remove the FM'ing, they were tuned up for full power out and used.  Experimenting with mine, ignoring all the caveats and tuning it up per the manual like in an aircraft and running off the dynamotor, the AM sounds so bad, that you really slope detect the FM by tuning high or low from the carrier freq to hear the audio, and that was on a BC348.  So, did radio ops of the day just live with the quirk?  I don't think the airborne radioman removed the chart bezel to get to the neutralization to make his TX sound good.
