[AMRadio] ARC 5 remote tuning

Does anybody know if the tuning cables used in the ARC 5 control boxes to RX's were really standard 
speedometer cables of the day?  Could the splined ends have really been 
auto parts adapted for ARC use?  Any old car buffs out there remember if 1938  Chevys or Fords used a well made splined coupling to connect 
speedo cables from transmission to speedometer that might have been  
borrowed for ARC use?  Ingenuity was rampant back then, everyday things 
found their way into custom govt specs.
