[AMRadio] Is AM a special case, or is it "just another mode"?

If you are an ARRL member the article in question is the September
Editorial by the so called "esteemed" Dave Sumner. The article is in PDF
format so if you want to download it go to the ARRL website, sign in then
type the word editorial in the search box and it should be the first
article..

>From my reading, this is nothing but another approach for digital
communications. Is the suggestion good or bad? I will let you decide. Once
before a committee suggested a bandwidth limit which would have impacted
ESSB and our mode, AM. It was adopted by the Board and discussion became so
intense they put a poll on their website to gauge how the amateur community
as a whole felt about the proposal.

There was so many against what they were proposing that it was dropped.
>From what I see there is nothing more than an attempt to change the symbol
rate for digital communications and nothing is in there to affect AM. But
given the ARRL's history everyone must be vigilant. The board has a habit
of adopting committee reports whose membership consist of just a small
sampling of the community as a whole. I find it strange some boards would
construe what is written to have any affect of AM but some people's
imagination can be pretty broad. Don is a good judge of the atmosphere on
those boards and how they are trending.

In the previous case it became obvious that the ARRL represents less than a
majority and they were covered with comments so deeply their proposal
disappeared. That is not to say they won't try again. I would post the
article, but it is copyrighted so no go. However if you can find a copy
read it and make your own determination. Those of you who are members be
sure to tell your director and vice director how you feel. Some of them are
like politicians in Washington, DC so be prepared for some pushback, which
if you get it in a negative sense, then keep the pressure on.
