John,
First off, your DX-60 in original, stock condition will do a very respectable job on AM. I'd suggest that you get on the high end of 40 meters, around 7290 to 7293, and look for other AM stations. There is AM activity quite often there out here in the Southwest (New Mexico).
There is a fun operating activity coming up in a couple of weeks, the "Classic Exchange." You can get more information on it at www.classicexchange.org/ . Click on "JANUARY 2013 CX ANNOUNCEMENT" for specifics. The phone session of the CX will run on Sunday, February 10. On the last CX in September, I had my DX-60 on 14270 AM and worked Rocco, N6KN, in California three times using three different receivers, a 75A3, HRO-50R1, and NC303. Rocco gave my DX-60 a 59 report, so it does get out pretty well. My antenna is nothing great, just a vertical 33 foot doublet.
Enjoy your rig!
Jim, W8KGI
