Hello Dear AM Buddies & you folks on the fence too!
Most of you remember that famous voice from Ashtabula, Ohio - call
letters W8VYZ. Like some of you, I was privileged to visit that QTH and
meet Bill & his charming wife Sylvia and venture down into the dark
recesses of their basement & witness a true (powerful old buzzard) AM
station. That same basement where AM came alive nightly to the delight
of stations all over North America, Hawaii, Carribean, and occasionally
a few chaps in Australia, New Zealand & ships at sea. W8VYZ with
coherts K6HQI, VE4BX were the beacons of 14286 "KC." Although Ashtabula
Bill and the others are gone, we still retain their fond memories and
are following in their footsteps to keep AM alive.
I received a dear letter from Bill's proud XYL recently. Like
some of us, she's dealing with health issues that accompany the ageing
process. To lessen her load, Sylvia is considering a smaller place -
perhaps near town where she wouldn't have so much work to manage. But,
she doesn't know how to go about getting the towers and antennas down
and getting rid of all the "junk." Her state of health is such that
she's too tired and sick to even think about it.
The XYL & I are both in declining health (I'll be 80 in weeks
from now). But, some of you younger lads & lassies may be close enough
to perhaps lend a Saturday or two to honor Bill's memory. You'll want
to compensate Sylvia for some items but I'm sure you'll end up with
something you've been seeking for a long time. For those with room, I
know of one beautiful tower (70 feet I believe) and another one or two.
The modulation transformer will take a husky hunk of man and two young
boys to haul it up those stairs.
Please talk this up on air! Perhaps you can arrange a working
party for the sake of safety and minimizing hernias. Sylvia's email ad.
in address above. Thank you! God bless & 73,
david
PS. If you remember the classic movie "Blues Brothers," you'll recall
their reply to Mother Superior - "We're on a mission from God." Please
try & help.
