Oil of Wintergreen and it is available at a pharmacy near you.  Here it is 
not on the shelf except behind the counter, why I don't know except it is 
expensive.  Maybe they keep it there to prevent theft.

I understand it is the Mystery in Marvel Mystery Oil.  It is a very light 
lubricant and that signature smell is worth it unlike PB Blaster.  I won't 
even bring a can of that stuff in the house and only use it in the garage 
with the big door open.

Unless the potentiometer is just dirty, that noise is a sign of eventual 
failure.  Depending on the damage area, it can last a while or a long time 
with cleaning and liberation.  If you want a permanent fix then replacement 
is the option.

Replacement is getting expensive though.  I recently ordered two 500K log 
pots without switches and the cost was over 10 bucks each at my discount.
