Bob, I am not familiar with the HX-50 but if it has a meter switch, check
it. The Globe Champion meter switch is notorious for dirty and intermittent
contact. You don't say, but if the power remains when the readings are all
over the place I would look at the meter, the switch and associated wiring
and shunts.
I have found meters that the stud for the output and input were loose and
that caused intermittent connections to the meter, just be sure the
circuitry and the meter functions the way it should.
