Welcome back Tom, and welcome aboard, Chance.
It's a fun mode for sure, enjoyable for the laid back approach to a contact
as much as the ease of listening to a natural sounding human voice. And you
can enjoy the mode with old equipment or new, including old school vacuum
tube or new Class E homebrew, the newer Flex SDR radios, or a good ol'
plate modulated rig like a converted broadcast transmitter. Many of the new
Yaecomwood transceivers even work and sound pretty decent on AM.
I'm guessing you were listening to the Collins Collectors Association AM
net last night. They hold it the first Wednesday of each month. I was
actually able to jump in early on for the first time in a year or more. Not
much for nets but now and again it's fun to pop in and say hi to old
friends as well as those I've yet to work. The only drawback is, you won't
hear 90% of those old rigs again until the next net. Would be nice to hear
more of those stations on more often.
You certainly picked a good receiver to listen in with. The 183D with its
p-p audio output sounds great on those AM signals. Last night was pretty
quiet too, compared to recent static-filled evenings.
Be sure to tune around the bands, you'll find AM everywhere from 10 through
160 on HF. There are several groups who hang around down in the 80m portion
below 3.740 most nights and weekends, the upper end of 40m 7.285 - .295 and
down around 7.160 which is an old AM watering hole from the past. On 15m
there's been a lot of activity up around 21.400-450.
Hope we get to work you on the air sometime over here in Raleigh, NC. Just
got my station back on the air in the last month and been itching to get on
more.
