Brian,
Cant help you as far as how to remove the catacomb assembly, but I have a 240-C which is black crinkle finish, so maybe you got an early version of the 240-D .. just my 2 cents

I recently picked up an NC 2-40D and getting ready to do a partial to full
restoration on it. I wonder if anyone in the group can tell me off the top
of their head how to remove the sliding catacomb so I can inspect the
butterfly contacts and clean if needed? At first glance, it appears I need
to remove the tuning dial string/cable in order to lift it out, and among
other things.
The 240D I got has a black wrinkle finish, however most I've seen always
had a gray finish. My first impression is to refinish it in the gray, but
I wonder if they ever made any that were black? In the areas where the
finish is still very good, it looks like a pro job, but who knows.
Thanks
