The '70s was a nightmare!  Some were running 450W amps behind one of the 
Pearce/Simpson rigs with a Siltronix VFO or a crystal box.  Plus using a 
10mtr Rat Shack beam.  Now they have keydowns with "Rod-of-God" antennas 
with 10s of KW.
