An "elmer" is a mentor (not menter). The term dates back to the
early days of amateur radio, and is part of the amateur radio culture
that every ham should know about.
I despair that the new crop of amateur radio operators doesn't know
what an "elmer" is and probably doesn't know what a "Wouff Hong" or a
"Rettysnitch" are either, and what is far worse, they have no
interest in finding out (not directed at you, you at least asked the
question). They're too stuck in the culture of telling me what their
"personal" is and saying things like "negatory" and... I swear it...
"10-4", and saying that they are a "HAM" as though "ham" were some
kind of an acronym (it isn't!).
I agree with you about the political correctness stuff... who needs
it?... reasonable people should be able to disagree without being
disagreeable... unfortunately that has also largely gone by the
wayside with this new crop of amateur radio operators.
