You've picked the right forum to get "elmered" in the ways of Ham Radio,
Bill. These guys have been around (mostly) much longer than I have (28
years) and as the rituals go, it's apparent (sometimes) for the youngest
to help the newest. So, in an effort to gently nudge you towards the
'proper' ways, #1, Q-signals shouldn't be used in Voice transmissions -
they were devised as shortcuts for CW ops. #2, QSL(/?) means "I
acknowledge and understand/Do you acknowledge? QSO is CW Shorthand for
'have a conversation with'. That's when you work another station.
Also, Bill - please... if you're going to get on AM, there might be some
that are in it for the quick-break on/off type of transmissions, and
that's fine, if that's what they like (I don't) but, at the end of every
transmission, it's -not- ok to say "QSL?" In fact, a little common
sense goes a long way... if you're operating AM, and you're producing a
Carrier, there should also be no reason to say 'over', or 'back to you',
'go ahead', etc... unless you're talking to more than one person, and
then "go ahead ..x.." where X is the person you are turning it to in the
round table.

There have been several FT-101 owners that have successfully used those
rigs on AM, mostly using an amplifier.
Looking forward to working you.
