I took the Extra Class exam from Mr. Cotton in Cincinnati in the mid 1950's.  I was in high school at the time.
As part of the sending test he asked me to send certain Q signals.  I was doing fine until he asked me to send the Q signal for "Your signal is defective."  I drew a blank and being a teenager I resorted to the then common, QLF (Quit Sending With Your Left Foot).
He lectured me in front of all those waiting to take the other exams about the serious responsibility of having an Extra Class license and the need to set good example of operating practice.  Talk about wanting to crawl under the table.  I passed the exam and suffered no long term impact to my self-esteem.  Still enjoying ham radio all these years later and using the fine Boat Anchor gear I would have loved to have had then.
