Rob,

I don't know what John's situation is.

I know that mine is such that I absolutely can't go flat top.

To add to the grief, the City and its Zoning Enforcement, will not allow 
me to erect anything that can "possibly" fall outside *my* property lines.

It depends on where you are,, and what you have to work within.  *If* I 
had "my" way, there would be power poles erected and antennas stretched 
out to get the best possible antennas.

It was much better when I was in Georgia, with the 120ft plus tall 
Oaks.  I went through enough hassle trying to stay away from HOAs and 
Covenants here in Virginia.
