[AMRadio] AM Power Obsession

Regarding the periodically recurring fuss that surfaces here concerning
"legal limit" ad nauseum, I suspect we are ALL running illegal power,
whether we work AM or SSB or CW). Remember, the RULES say we MUST run
"minimum power necessary to maintain the desired communication". How many
hams can honestly say they strictly observe that rule? There is no getting
around the fact: those who don't, are running ILLEGAL POWER.

So what's the point of raising such a big fuss over what power level someone
happens to attain with a phone transmitter on an occasional voice peak,
while the vast majority of hams are, and have been, running ILLEGAL POWER
all along, regardless. Please explain how one form of ILLEGAL POWER can be
considered more (or less) acceptable than another form of ILLEGAL POWER?

Do the same people who worry excessively over this issue (and even worse,
concern themselves over other people's operation) conscientiously obey the
posted speed limit 100% of the time when they drive an automobile? Which one
poses the greater risk to the public, running a two-ton machine beyond the
posted speed limit on a highway shared with others, or running a ham radio
transmitter a little over the so-called "legal limit"?
