How about this dumb idea.

How about using your SSB gear with a linear on SSB and then invest some time 
and money in a real AM rig designed for AM.  Go for a DX-60, Globe Scout, 
DX-100 or any level Viking (Ranger Viking I or II, Valiant).   Or, go for 
some St James Collins gear, B&W 5100, Johnson Desk KW, or Collins KW-1.  Or 
go buy yourself an old 1 KW AM Broadcast Transmitter and restore it. 
(Range:  $50 to $30,000).   There is a rig out there for any budget.  You 
might learn something working on it too!
