Not to belabor the point nor stoke people's ideas about this, but many
of you nationwide know Lum K5AYD. He lives about 75 miles West of me
and uses only an Apache. He was a regular check in to the Collins nets
and never fails to be heard.
I have seen Lum's station and the only thing I see different is the coax
to his antenna. His antenna isn't more than 25 ft. high and is in a
dipole configuration. With that 100-110 watts he talked any time and
any place he chose.
If any of you are wondering, Lum's wife is in assisted living and he had
roof work on his house. The roof work required his antenna come down
and it isn't back up yet. He spends a lot of time with his wife of
many, many years.
But the important thing is we can build or assemble any station we
desire. I, like Darrell, wish we all knew how to operate them properly.
There are some who don't but the majority does and if the original
poster want to use a class B or whatever amp, so be it. Just listen to
the advice of many knowledgeable people here on how to use it and have
fun building. That is what it is all about. We are the only group with
licenses that can build equipment and put it on the air.
