[AMRadio] Bugged by CW?

I also see some AM operators 25 KHz wide, or more.
Kind of rude on a crowded band, but you are not allowed to say anything
about it.

Be sure to download and try sdr-radio and HDSDR, two great programs for the
sdr-iq.

I dug out my SDR-IQ and have it hooked to this computer to check the bands
before heading to the garage, where my station, AKA debris pile is located.
It is amazing what some of the CW signals look like, a significient number,
probably 25% simply look fuzzy, SSB frequently have poor sideband rejection
and splatter extending for many KC. I actually saw one that had splatter
from his freq ( 3608) extending up to the 3.8 range. amazing!!!

When I got my Novice ticket in 1957 I was in the USAF. I did not have money
to buy much radio stuff.

A M/Sgt in the squadron gave me a S-38(original with the real BFO) that he
had RE-KITTED. The first thing I learned was how to assemble a receiver and
make it work. The second thing I did was to build a Novice transmitter out
of one of the mid 50's handbooks. 6AG7/807! I used it for my Novice year.
With ONE crystal. I had contacts almost every night on 40M.

My second receiver was a BC-312. It was not until 1960 I was able to get a
modern receiver. It was a NC-109. I used it for 10 years. I have one now and
it can hear things my Kenwood R-2000 cannot!

If you want to work on radios, you do not want to work on RICEBOXES!

The most modern rigs here are a Kenwood TS-520 and a Kenwood R-2000.

All the rest of my stuff is 100% tube stuff. Heath, Drake, National, and
Hallicrafters.

I have been watching some of the messageboards for solid state (RICEBOXES)
and observing the problems people have trying to fix this stuff.

Besides most of the people not having a clue what they are doing, when this
stuff is broke it is very difficult to repair.

At least most of the parts in my tube stuff are big enough to see!

Well,
a person "on the air" asked me, "what kind of rig I was using,
when I said "Heathkit", he asked if that was a "NEW" company!!!

The level of some of the folks, technology wise is certainly going
down. I have yet to hear conversations on the air about "Home-Brewing"
a transmitter or 'gasp' a receiver, it's this or that rice-box and if it
breaks
what happens, they are off the air. No tune-up just punch a few buttons
and the "little computer gizmo" does the rest, Hummmmm!

I am a little surprised at these comments, it sounds like CW is pretty
scarce. I hear lots of CW stations here in the evening and even the daytime
(OHIO) I did make one contact a few days ago, but my sending with even a
straight key is simply an embarrassment!!! That was why only the one
contact, I did not want to subject anyone else to that!!!

I probably should not say this, but I am getting to the point that I do not
want to even hear SSB on 75/80, and/ or talk to those guys that sound like
that have a mouth full of golf balls and a room temp IQ!!! Very big change
from the time when most built at least some portion of their gear. I would
have never guessed that I would see the time that people buy a stupid
dipole!!!
