I would also agree ... my 400's modulator has been modded from what I can see and I have always gotten glowing compliments on my audio quality ..just a bare D104 mic. Much better than the Heaths, Johnsons or military stuff I have heard.. No doubt that Leo thew whatever he got cheap surplus into these, but a lot was military quality .. certainly not to  commercial standards by a  long long shot..

I would disagree about it being marginal, I have owned one for years, 
and other than having to replace a modulator a few years back it has 
always worked fine. I have owned many rigs, Collins, Johnson, and so on 
and have had far more issues with these than my GK400.

But as we all know it's a matter time and they all will have issues. I 
want to leave you with the words of a buddy of mine.
