But the question is about the old iron. Other than what may have been her
original demise are the odds reasonable that if I go to the hassle of
recovering the transformers that they will be ok, or is protracted
unfortunate,
storage more likely than not to render that stuff unuseable?
And is there any process you go through under these circumstances to
condition the hardware before you start to test it under load?

I know a lot of people will say slow drying in the proverbial 'kitchen oven'
at 200~300° F. What might be a better place is a welding oven that is used
to dry welding rods for 'code' welds. We have a number of them at our work
place. If you know someone that welds, stuff it in there for a while. It
can't hurt it any worse than it already is. Then perform a HI-Pot test to
make sure you have proper insulation between windings. If you attempt to
plug it in prior to drying, you may make irreparable damage to it.
