I found an antenna on a 800 mhz mobile one time that ,on the nmo connector had "cooked"it had gone conndutcive. Also it will tend to hold moisture on the connetor point i found a drop of water inside the silicone that could not escape, someone used to much silicone .the only reason i ever used the silicone pac was to lubricate the o ring.

Hi Darryl,
Interesting to read your comments Darryl. Working for Motorola and as
an MSS owner for over 20 years is where I learned about the stuff. At
the time I didn't know what it was but never did have trouble associated
with the grease. All the troubles I found with antennas were because of
defective connectors and lightning strikes.
In the days I was working in the field both Phelps Dodge and DB Products
sent the small packets with both types of connectors. However they were
explicit in the directions for UHF antennas not to use the substance. I
don't have UHF equipment and a dummy load to test the frequency range,
but given the specs of the stuff, I will bet it becomes conductive.
My frequencies will be below 30 Mc so it will not be an issue. All
connectors will be PL 259 and after I assemble them, I will cover the
connectors with tape then use heat shrink. By the way, where did you
work for Motorola?
